I was so excited to have my work titled:  “Day 280” selected to be part of this wonderful Annual Regional Juried Exhibition at Definitely Superior Art Gallery right here in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada!! The exhibition runs from 12th Sep 2025 – 22nd Nov 2025

The theme for this years exhibition was “Liminal” – description:  [is a word for the in between, it describes states, times, spaces etc…that exist at a point of change. It has served as a basis for words such as sublime: lofty in conception or expression].

Artist Statement

Birth as a Liminal Experience:

Birth can be understood as a liminal space, a physical and emotional threshold between two distinct phases of life.

For some women this transition can be a short period, maybe 2 hours from beginning labour to birth. Personally, I endured a total of 52 hours! I cannot recall all that happened during this period of time. Some say women enter  “their own world” and experience an “altered state of consciousness”  – perhaps a birthing high?  I do remember feeling like my body was not my own. Literally it wasn’t as I had been sharing it with my yet to be born child for 280 days and the epidurals took away all bodily sensation.

Yes, it’s an odd time during labour and delivery. You’re no longer just a pregnant woman, but not yet a parent. And while birth can be a joyous and empowering experience, it can also be traumatic as potentials for both positive and negative thoughts & experiences within this liminal space in time can and will occur.
